Forlorn Hope, 2022

FORLORN HOPE is an art game without highscores, a poetic journey where the player wanders between different symbolic stations in a fantastic landscape based on real 17th century places in Germany, where you and every person you meet is a skeleton. The aesthetics of the game is inspired by the Grotteschi of Piranesi, Thirty Years War broadsheet propaganda, dream plays, and the etchings of Matthaeus Merian, seen through a contemporary lens.

In the 17th Century, old orders crumbled as new ways of life were explored, pushed by literacy and publishing. People crossdressed to join or avoid the military, kings slept on the ground, scientific thinking gained traction and conservatives were terrified. Death was omnipresent, sparking both despair and hedonism.
